Tips for Video Training

Monday, August 1, 2016

As video technologies become more available and easier to use, many companies are supplementing their training programs with these tools. However, while video can be a powerful asset in any training regimen, there are numerous ways that even the best efforts can fail. One of the first mistakes many companies make is trying to accomplish all their goals in a single video. While that temptation is understandable, it’s important to make content digestible. While there is no perfect length, it's important to break videos down into smaller pieces that address single issues so those in training will retain the information. Similarly, it’s important that the content be relevant and meaningful. Before shooting, it’s important to know the goal of the video  and the target audience. Videos that will be shown to current employees will differ in tone and content from videos shown to new hires. Additionally, it’s important that videos are produced professionally. According to a recent study, 78 percent of employees will watch at least one online video every week. Because of this, training videos need to be well produced and free of distractions such as bad actors and outdated music. If you make the video easy to watch, the content will shine through.
