“Stretch” Training Keeps Employees Retained

Thursday, August 25, 2016

A recent study of LinkedIn data has quantified what most HR managers have been suspecting for years—Millennial employees are changing jobs more frequently than their older professional counterparts. According to the study, Millennial employees changed employers approximately once every 2.5 years during their 20s and early 30s. This is twice as frequently as their Gen X predecessors. While this restlessness has yielded skyrocketing turnover rates in some industries, smart managers are taking advantage of it. The challenge becomes offering young employees more opportunities within an organization so they don’t look for it elsewhere. Hootsuite CEO Ryan Holmes has started a pilot program to create stretch opportunities that help his top talent hone their existing skills, and also allow them to explore and train in different skill sets within the company. These “stretch” employees spend about one day a week on their adopted teams during a 90-day trial period and the rest of the time in their official role. At the conclusion of the trial period, if the new role is working out for everyone, the employee can switch to full time in the new position once their current position is filled.
