Communication Key to Wellness Program Success

Monday, October 10, 2016

Most employers would agree that they want their workforces to be happy and healthy, and many companies have established various wellness programs to accomplish this goal. However, getting employees to actually participate in these programs is a different challenge altogether. The Harvard Business Review recently surveyed 465 full-time employees at companies that currently offer a health, wellness, or fitness program to understand why people participate and why they don't. The study found that 60 percent of nonparticipants indicated they would be open to participating in a wellness program, but for various reasons have decided their company's program isn't right for them. These reasons included a lack of information regarding the program, inconvenience, an unsupportive company culture, or privacy concerns. However, among all the barriers named, 69 percent of respondents cited the first reason: They were simply unaware that their workplace offered a wellness program in the first place.
