Technology is affecting the way individuals think about and perform their work. According to Roze Philips, a doctor for Accenture Consulting, smart devices and big data analytics are democratizing the workplace by enabling tailored roles and rewards, allowing once-vertical industries to move more horizontally and organizations to focus more on their human capital. "Technology is allowing employees to move away from doing mundane, dangerous work that machines can do for them,” says Philips. “Machines are becoming cleverer in terms of how they respond to the user and how they think." Another reason for the rise of technological solutions in the workplace is the shift in demographics. It’s estimated that by 2025, 75 percent of the workforce will be Millennials, and 15 percent of Millennials are already in management roles. "These Millennials prefer to choose when and where to work rather than being placed in a nine-to-five position,” says Philips. “About 90 percent of them do not plan to stay with any given employer for more than five years. They prefer on-the-spot recognition over formal reviews and 60 percent of them prefer a job with social impact.” She adds, “Technology is a key influencer of these new ways of working."
