Happiness and Fulfillment in the Workplace

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is a familiar maxim in America, but the last element, the pursuit of happiness, seems to have fallen by the wayside in modern times. For years, work and life were two separate categories, but recently that line has been blurred, with many employees never feeling as if they are completely unplugged from their professional life. As a result, fulfillment with life has become inextricably tied to work, with the “pursuit of happiness” applying not only to people's home lives but also to their work lives. And unfortunately, many organizations are falling short on making employees happy. This is evidenced by plummeting engagement rates, soaring turnover, and a slew of directionless, cynical employees flooding the workforce. So how can employers reverse this trend? The first step is to simply pay attention to their people. When an organization starts acknowledging its workers as human beings, rather than cogs in a system, they will take notice. This can be as simple as getting to know team members personally, or being flexible when a worker needs it.
