Organizations Totally Unprepared for Cyber Attack

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Businesses across the globe are not prepared for a cyber attack, and the problem is only going to get worse. According to a report released by the Ponemon Institute, 74 percent of IT security professionals don’t believe employees are taking security seriously enough and are complacent when it comes to security protocol. Worse, 71 percent believe that employees aren’t even aware of their organization’s protocol. And the problem will only intensify as more devices become smarter. This past year, millions of Internet-connected devices were the victims of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and three-quarters of IT professionals surveyed said they don’t believe their organizations are fully prepared to deal with the security risks that will result from increased utilization of the Internet of Things. According to Stan Black, chief security officer at Citrix Systems, organizations need to take a four-step approach to fix the issue. First, they have to understand there is a problem. Next, they need to identify the problem’s scope and scale within their organization. Then, they should bring in employees or third-party consultants to understand what needs to be done. Finally, they should recruit the additional talent needed to maintain their networks properly.
