Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schulz says he plans to hire 10,000 refugees over the course of the next five years in the 75 countries where the coffee giant does business. In a letter to employees, Schultz said Starbucks would “start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support.” The company employs about 238,000 people worldwide, and 157,000 in the United States. The letter also said Starbucks would help support coffee growers in Mexico, provide health insurance to eligible workers regardless of the Affordable Care Act’s status, and back immigration programs that allow young immigrants who arrived in the country as children to apply for a two-year stay of deportation and work permit. The move shows the increasingly complex interplay CEOs must navigate between business and government. Schultz added that Starbucks would aim to communicate with workers frequently, saying, "I am hearing the alarm you all are sounding that the civility and human rights we have all taken for granted for so long are under attack."
