Attracting Tomorrow’s Workforce

Monday, February 27, 2017

Today's forward-thinking workplaces are concerned with how to attract and retain Millennial talent, and for good reason. This population group, born between 1982 and 2002, will soon make up an estimated 70 percent of the workforce. However, with this massive influx of young people comes an upending of workplace values that were once held sacrosanct. Conventions are being upended as unique workplaces, unlimited vacations, and telecommuting options are becoming the norm rather than the exception. To attract Millennials, there are several things a company can do. First, it’s important that it lives its own values. Hyperbolic corporate values are easily spotted by younger folks, who would rather see companies know who they are, who they want to partner with, and what kind of culture they want, rather than being paid lip service about “creating a better world.” Additionally, Millennials are looking for companies that are interested in the long game. The term sustainability is important to younger members of the workforce, but no longer simply means being responsible environmentally. Truly sustainable organizations—ones that are the most attractive—are those that value diversity and consider work-life balance and emotional intelligence as top priorities.
