Attention spans are narrowing, and this means training has to get smarter. According to recent studies, the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds in 2017. The average employee consumes media nearly 11 hours every day, and shifts their attention between devices at 21 times per hour, on average. One of the most important takeaways from this information for the training industry is that employees are no longer considering what they are looking at, but rather what they should be looking at. Keeping them engaged during training will need a different approach. Games are one possible solution. By focusing on social and competitive elements, players (or trainees) are better able to engage with the material. Attention is heightened, focus is sustained, and knowledge is imparted. In a recent case study released by Karl Kapp, there is a 17 percent higher knowledge retention rate in curriculum involving games, compared with traditional lectures. What’s more, games are highly customizable and can be applied over a wide range of industries and roles.
