To Reduce Stress, Boost Engagement

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Many of today’s modern employees are overworked, underpaid, and consumed by stress. This leads to increased absenteeism, poor performance, burnout, and ultimately turnover. Stress can affect employees' professional and personal lives. Research has shown high levels of stress to be detrimental to an individual’s health. However, there are ways companies can mitigate stress and, by extension, improve their employee’s productivity and overall well-being. One of the most effective ways is by boosting engagement. According to the Limeade Institute, there is a direct correlation between stress and engagement levels. According to a recent study released by the institute, 57 percent of highly engaged workers reported low stress levels at their job, and only 17 percent of unengaged employees reported the same low stress levels. "One possible explanation is that employees who are highly engaged are immersed in their work and have high levels of energy and enthusiasm about their work; thus, they may not necessarily view their jobs as stressful," the study's authors wrote. "Alternatively, the organizations that have more highly engaged employees may be less stressful or may be actively helping their employees manage job stress."
