Millennials Aren’t Lazy for Leaving, They’re Finding Better Cultures

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

Doug Lipp, the author of Disney U and architect of the world-famous company’s training program, recently spoke at the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitor Industry Luncheon. There, Lipp discussed matters pertaining to workforce empowerment, the importance of a diverse workplace, and safety and compliance issues. One particular notion stuck out: the common classification of the “lazy Millennial.” Lipp doesn’t buy the stereotype and thinks that managers who use it as a crutch are indeed the ones who are lazy. “As soon as somebody says ‘those darn fill-in-the-blank’—you could say Millennials, you can say whatever you want—that tells me that person is too lazy to step into that universe and figure it out,” Lipp told the Sioux Falls Business Journal. “They say, ‘well, as long as you act like me, we’ll get along fine. So you adjust to me, I’m not going to adjust to you.” It’s not that Millennial workers are inherently lazier than their more seasoned counterparts, Lipp says, but that those holding the keys to the business kingdom, so to speak, aren’t willing to adapt to the changing ways business is being done. Millennials aren’t leaving organizations because they don’t want to work hard; they are finding better opportunities and better cultures elsewhere.
