The Pros and Cons of Work-From-Home Policies

Monday, April 24, 2017

Remote working has been a growing trend for years, and today, 62 percent of employees work out of the office at least part of the time. Buying into this trend seems to be paying off, with research showing that remote work arrangements can contribute to boosts in productivity. However, there has been pushback. Citing decreases in productivity, companies like Yahoo and IBM have removed work-from-home policies to increase employee collaboration and on-site productivity. So what makes some employees less productive at home? In a typical office setting, the standard 9-5 mindset offers employees structure, encouraging focus to complete tasks within a specific timeframe rather than tackling various tasks throughout the day. Employees who lack the discipline to structure their own workdays will likely see decreases in productivity if allowed to work from home. Additionally, face-to-face interaction can be valuable in certain industries. In-person collaboration drives innovation, and this can be lost if employees are allowed to set their own schedules remotely. However, technological innovations like videoconferencing and live chats can keep collaboration alive, and maybe even foster it more than simply placing workers in an office together.
