Restaurant Uses Virtual Reality to Train New Hires

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

New employee training can be a pretty boring experience, particularly in the restaurant industry. Generally, the hiring manager sits the worker down in a back room, where they watch a tedious training video. However, Honeygrow, a Philadelphia-based chain of fast-casual Asian restaurants, is using virtual reality together with 360-degree video to provide a more engaging experience for new workers. The training app is based on Google Daydream to drive interactions, making it especially easy for those who have never used virtual reality systems before. “We found that people were easily able to navigate through the experience more naturally with the point-and-click interaction of the Daydream controller. This controller made for a more direct connection to the app versus the soft-tap touchpad of the Oculus Gear VR,” said a Honeygrow spokesperson. “We also used the additional buttons on the Daydream controller to add more input functionality to the experience. One of the originally unused buttons was programmed to access a secret menu for internal demo purposes.” The plan is to put every new hire through the virtual reality training before they ever set foot on the restaurant floor.
