Want Engaged Employees? Engage Your Leadership.

Thursday, June 29, 2017

According to Gallup, 87 percent of employees across the globe are not engaged with their jobs. In the United Kingdom, this disengagement translates to £340 billion a year in lost productivity. However, these figures focus particularly on the rank-and-file staff of organizations. Little is said about the engagement of leadership. “It’s absolutely the case leaders set the tone. It’s they who set the standard, so leaders actually need to be even more engaged,” argues Kate Cooper, head of applied research and policy at the Institute of Leadership and Management. “Even when things aren’t going well, they almost need to rise above this.” Simply put, leaders can be inspiring, or they can foster discontent. Disengaged leadership is a major cause of the discontentment many employees feel in their workplaces, and many experts agree employee disengagement is a reflection of what they see in their leadership. “It’s interesting lots of leaders still don’t focus on their own engagement or what I call their own energy,” says Charlene Li, author of the New York Times bestseller The Engaged Leader. “Yet it’s even more important they maintain this over time.”
