Audi Using VR to Train Logistics Employees

Monday, August 28, 2017

Audi’s new packing logistics training program can fit into a suitcase—a computer, a pair of virtual reality (VR) goggles, and two controllers. The interactive VR program is designed like a video game and can be set up anywhere, increasing flexibility and cutting training travel expenses to zero. When employees put on the goggles, they see a true-to-life simulation of a workstation in the Ingolstadt Logistics Center and manipulate this environment using the two handheld controllers. “The response of the employees to the virtual training is extremely positive,” said Project Head Mirko Göres, from Brand Logistics Information Process Planning. “After a six-month pilot phase, two process training programs are now in permanent use in CKD Logistics. We are now working with the training center in Ingolstadt and the Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt Plant Logistics to develop three additional VR training programs on the topics of pick-by-light, pick-by-tablet, and pick-by-voice,” he added. The program gives employees real-time feedback, and each exercise can be repeated as many times as they wish. An on-site trainer helps analyze the employees’ performance in the virtual space and offers help and suggestions for further training.
