You Can’t Train Your Way to Cultural Change

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Continuous, meaningful training and employee education are important aspects of any business; studies suggest this type of employee support is crucial in maintaining high profit margins and keeping high-level employees engaged and retained. Indeed, most individuals entering the workforce rate training and development as one of their most valued workplace benefits, but training and education alone will never change a company’s culture. “We’ve known for over 50 years that providing information alone to people does not change their behavior,” said Dr. Victor Strecher, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. “There are a lot of reasons why people do what they do, but a lack of awareness of their actions’ potential repercussions ranks pretty far down the list.” So what does change culture? First, changes in processes and structure. This creates new workforce behaviors and new workforce habits. Additionally, the metrics by which performance is measured need to change to match the organization’s new goals. And third, accountability is critical to sustaining and maintaining change.
