This special report announces the decision of the first year the committee of the National Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award has accepted applications from the education and health-care sectors. And it details--with firsthand accounts from IBM, Colgate, the NEA, and other organizations--how several companies and associations are working with educational institutions and conducting activities to collaborate on K-12 education, with the goal to produce a more literate, technologically skilled American workforce of the future. Such activities include providing after-school opportunities; sponsoring global learning communities of teachers, content experts, young people, parents, and industry; and something called Shadow Day, on which inner-city kids get to follow around businesspeople one-on-one and learn what they do at work throughout a day. The Baldridge business award criteria were adapted to create a new set of criteria specific to educational institutions. The report also explains the process for applying for an award and announces the 1999 winners.
