Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP)

CPLP Testing Requirements

To earn the CPLP credential, candidates must pass two (2) exams:

  • Knowledge Exam
  • Skills Application Exam (SAE)

Once a candidate has successfully passed the Knowledge Exam, they may register to take the Skills Application Exam (SAE). The Skills Application Exam (SAE) is focused on one (1) area of expertise to be chosen by the candidate from among these options:

  • Training Delivery
  • Instructional Design
  • Managing Learning Programs

*NEW: CPLP candidates with an APTD certification or an eligible ATD Masters designation can now opt-out of portions of the CPLP Knowledge Exam. Those with the APTD certification, will be eligible to opt-out of the Training Delivery, Instructional Design and Learning Technologies areas of expertise on the CPLP exam. Holders of the ATD Master Trainer or Master Instructional Designer designations will be able to opt-out of the area of expertise covered by their designation, either Training Delivery or Instructional Design.

New candidates who register for the December 2018 Knowledge Exam will get a free retest in 2019, if needed. The free retest is valid for the Knowledge Exam window in March 2019.

The Knowledge Exam:

The Knowledge Exam covers all ten areas of expertise in the ATD competency model. Once a candidate has successfully passed the Knowledge Exam, they may register to take the Skills Application Exam.

  • Exam time: 3 hours
  • Exam length: 150 questions covering all 10 areas of expertise
  • Exam type: Multiple choice questions
  • Computer-based exam at conveniently located testing centers

The Skills Application Exam (SAE):

The SAE tests your ability to apply concepts to real-world situations. During the SAE, four cases related to your selected area of expertise are provided. Candidates then answer questions about each scenario.

  • Exam time: 3 hours
  • Exam length: 100 questions about cases in one area of expertise
  • Exam type: Multiple choice, multiple select and short answer
  • Computer-based exam at conveniently located testing centers

How Much Does It Cost?

  • Exam fee: $900 (members) and $1250 (non-members)
  • Fee includes: The CPLP registration fee includes seats for both exams, exam score reports, and CPLP Certificate and lapel pin once the credential is achieved. Prep courses and materials are optional and not included in the exam fee.

How Do I Register for the Exam?

  • To register for the exam go to the CPLP application system.
  • If this is your first time in the application system, you may need to complete additional fields and identify as a CPLP candidate.
  • If you have the APTD or a qualifying ATD Master's designation, please indicate during registration that you would like to take the opt-out exam.

When and Where Can I Take the Exam?

  • Exams can be taken at convenient testing centers around the world.
  • There are typically four testing windows throughout the year for both the Knowledge Exam and the Skills Application Exam.
  • The registration deadlines are approximately 45 days before each testing window begins.
  • The remaining test windows for 2018 and upcoming test windows for 2019 are listed below.

NOTE: New candidates who register for the December 2018 Exam window will get a free retest in March 2019. The free retest is valid for the Knowledge Exam window in March 2019 only.
