This installment of Toolbox Tip details what developers should know about two new releases in the world of authoring tools: Articulate Storyline SDK and Lecotra 11.3.

Storyline SDK

A few weeks ago, Articulate announced that the Storyline SDK is finally available. What is an SDK, you ask?

SDK stands for Software Development Kit, and it enables programmers (true programmers) to customize some of the features of the software. For example, it will now be possible to create custom player interfaces—more so than what’s available in the Player dialog box.

You can download the SDK yourself for free and start coding, or you can wait for some of the e-learning “support” companies like eLearningBrothers to create new player skins or widgets that you can purchase.

Lectora 11.3

On November 3rd, Trivantis announced the release of Lectora 11.3. The two features I am most interested in are the status indicators and the increased accessibility support.

You can now add status indicators to menus and tables of contents, and you can also put your own automatic status indicators wherever you want them, such as in a header or on a home page.  (See Figure 1.) For even further customization, there is now an action to set the status, so you can make it contingent on certain actions or conditions.

For developers interested in accessibility, Lectora 11.3 now complies with the standards set in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 – Level AA.
