Employee development is incredibly important. Studies show that development opportunities are almost as important as salary when considering taking on a new role or staying at a current one. However, there are many paths one can take to success, and it's not going to happen organically. Start by defining your success. What does it look like? Rank these elements from most important to least important and consider the skills you'll need to develop to achieve each: the ability to travel, a C-suite title, remote work, and decision-making authority. Set a timeframe for reaching these goals and establish milestones and checkpoints along the way. Consider the resources your organization makes available—how can you best leverage them? Remember, your actions will drive your success, but it's important to ask for help along the way.
