Our lives are comprised of an endless string of decisions. Some are simple and some are more complicated. Some of the complicated ones demand intense introspection and contemplation; however, there is a point where consideration no longer becomes helpful and overthinking paralyzes the decision-making process. The cycle of overthinking decisions saps confidence and kills productivity. It’s important for people, especially those in leadership positions, to be able to break through indecision driven by overthinking and be able to act decisively. To do so, consider the utility of perfectionism. The desire to make the perfect decision is one of the biggest blocks to decision making because it implies that there is only one “correct” choice and that all other choices lead to various types of failure. Give up the idea that everything must be perfect, and your decision making is going to improve. Also, it helps to right-size problems. Not everything is as potentially earth-shattering as it might seem. Some decisions should and do demand days of thought but many more don’t. Taking time to get your arms around a particular decision can help you differentiate between what’s meaningful consideration and what’s obsession. Finally, understand that decisions, like work, fill the space we allow it to occupy. If you give yourself a week to make a big decision on who should be promoted, thinking about that decision is going to fill that week. Give decisions space that’s appropriate then move on.
