Many business leaders fear that fully remote or hybrid work arrangements will alienate workers, that culture will break down, and that communication will become difficult; however, the numbers simply do not back this up. As it turns out, employees can learn from and influence each other across great distances without ever having to see or hear from each other. However, the reverse side of this coin is that communication is in a sad state of affairs, regardless of if employees are on-site or not. Only 7 percent of US workers agree that communication is open, accurate, and timely at their place of business, and 22 percent strongly agree that their leaders have a clear direction for their organization. Oftentimes communication at an organization is so poor that it drives people to look for employment elsewhere. Better communication, however, starts with three key ideas: accuracy, openness, and timeliness. By keeping these three elements in mind, employers will dramatically improve how they communicate with their employees. Gallup also found that one type of communication is critically important and something that leaders must get right—exactly what is expected of employees.
