For almost two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has torn through global populations, leaving death and devastation in its wake. Responsible business owners reacted quickly, shuffling processes and expectations to allow employees to work remotely to protect themselves and their loved ones. Now, as we have a better grip on the disease and vaccines are becoming more ubiquitous, most people are yearning for a return to normalcy. But does that mean business leaders should declare that their operations are back to the way they were? That employees are required to return to the traditional nine to five? Some leaders may say the sooner the better, but the data says otherwise. On average, employees want to work 2.5 days a week from home, and the vast majority expect more flexible working arrangements into perpetuity once the pandemic has fully abated. Companies like Goldman Sachs, and years before, Yahoo, that declare that flexible arrangements and remote working are unacceptable have been berated in the media and are losing talent. These organizations have had to about-face—Goldman Sachs just announced its new hires will be paid 30 percent more—meanwhile, organizations that have embraced flexibility have been thriving.
