Careers can be chaotic, and people’s paths are rarely linear. You might find yourself unexpectedly laid off and in a role you think has nothing to do with the career you want. But if you adopt this mentality, you might squander an opportunity. Growth can occur anywhere—especially when considering soft skills. No matter where you're working, communication skills are important. Taking complex problems, explaining them to people, and resolving them is a vital skill to cultivate no matter where you're working, and it's always a skill you can practice. Problem-solving and influencing others without authority are two additional skills that can be honed no matter where you are in your career. Learning to be more empathetic—to understand others and put yourself in their shoes—will serve you both professionally and personally. No matter where you find yourself, there are opportunities to become better.
