Don’t Offer Meaningless Perks. Create a Culture of Learning

If we’re serious about retaining top talent, we need to get over the idea that professionals are going to stick around because of free snacks and bring-your-dog-to-work day. The resounding call from employees is to not waste their time and to provide them with what they need to succeed and grow in their roles. The numbers on this are clear—only 17 percent of employees want to work in the office full time, and 94 percent say they would stay at a job longer if their company invested in their learning and development. And this isn’t a sunk cost. Building a culture of learning gives your business a competitive advantage. Not only will it attract talented individuals, but by constantly evolving, you’ll always be at the leading edge of your industry. However, creating a learning culture is easier said than done. Start by fostering a mentality that learning is everyone’s job. Build roles in such a way that learning goals are baked in and time and resources are allocated for upskilling. Focus career growth on development, not just promotions and higher levels of compensation.
