Employee engagement is a difficult concept to nail down. We all know what it is, but when asked to define it—or perhaps even more challenging—when asked how to increase it, many are left scratching their heads. To understand engagement, though, sometimes it helps to take a look at the numbers. For instance, organizations whose cultures highly value recognition are 2.5 times more likely to see higher employee engagement scores. Feedback is also an important element of employee engagement. Nearly 60 percent of employees wish that their companies concluded employee engagement surveys more frequently. Consider sending out weekly pulse surveys to improve feedback mechanisms, and act quickly on the feedback you’re receiving. That helps with the next element of engagement—empowerment. A full 70 percent of employees feel that empowerment to succeed is a critical factor in their engagement levels, and managers who stand in the way of this empowerment are a destructive force.
