Toxic is a popular word used to describe workplaces to individual personalities these days; however, it has been overused to the extent that its true meaning has become hard to pinpoint. Spotting a toxic workplace is difficult, especially if you’re managing one. Here are some warning signs your organization might be crossing the point of no return into toxicity. If your company—or a company you’re thinking about working for—offers a ton of incentives, you may want to ask why they have to essentially bribe people to work there. Bringing your dog to work on Friday could be fun, but are they covering up for an unmanageable workload? A lack of privacy can also be a sign of a toxic workplace. This goes hand in hand with micromanagement. If employees aren’t autonomous and empowered to make their own decisions, that workplace might be turning toxic. Fixing a toxic workplace is a difficult battle depending on how bad things have become, but a good place to start is a realignment of values and transparent, two-way communication.
