In late October, most employers in New York City were required by law to begin including salary ranges on open job postings. Supporters of the move say it will help alleviate long-standing pay discrepancies between men and women and White and minority workers. Beverly Neufeld, president and founder of PowHer, said the new law is a game changer for job seekers. “The information that was being held very tightly by employers is now out in the open,” she said. “It almost creates a power-sharing relationship with potential employees. That shift is gonna be uncomfortable and maybe difficult in the beginning.” This trend is growing nationwide. New York City now joins several states that have enacted some sort of pay transparency legislation in recent years including Colorado, Rhode Island, Nevada, and Connecticut. Almost all online job postings or storefront job advertisements will be required to list real salary minimums and maximums and cannot be open-ended like “$15 per hour and up.”
