Today’s workers find themselves in global enterprises and on cross-cultural teams that interact in virtual, technology-driven environments. Are we adequately preparing leaders and team members with the knowledge and skills required to succeed? The cost of not asking this question is great. Cross-cultural communication breakdowns, fueled by the lack of context and connection that can characterize virtual communication, contribute to broken trust and unsuccessful projects. Failed mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures due to cultural misunderstanding can result in billion-dollar losses. And yet research indicates that fewer than 16 percent of employees who work virtually in multinational organizations receive any specific preparation or training for this work.
