The era of video meetings is in full swing, and it’s not looking like this trend will be going away any time soon. However, many people find these digital meeting places unnerving, and on-camera discussions can quickly turn into a source of anxiety. How can you best handle this stress? Like with most problems, identifying the key root can help assuage anxiety. Start by asking yourself what you have control over. This might look like blocking off time on your schedule, so you have enough time to prepare for the meeting or addressing any cognitive distortions that are making you feel like you’re coming to the meeting from a negative place. Then, identify where you’re putting your attention. “The danger with anxiety is the unconsciousness of it. It’s the feeling out of control. And so just by creating control, we can start to create more conscious thinking and speaking,” Lee Bonvissuto, a communications coach, says. “If you can anchor to one thing at a time, whether a physical prop, your breath, or your body leaning back in the chair, it becomes this strong foundation, almost like a place to return home to.”
