As record numbers of employees leave their positions, employers are struggling to stem the tide of resignations. One tool they’re employing is the “stay interview.” But what exactly are these conversations, and how should you use them? The main concept is to ask questions similar to what would be asked in an exit interview, but before the employee is thinking about quitting. The interview should focus on what’s working well, what isn’t working well, and anything that’s totally broken. There is a major caveat associated with the stay interview, though. The feedback delivered by the employees needs to be acted on. If one of your top performers tells you they don’t have the tools to effectively do their job, you need to get them the tools and training they requested. If not, the results can be worse than if the questions were never asked at all.
