Layoffs are making headlines right now—particularly among major tech companies. However, these workforce adjustments have unintended consequences. They’re hindering upskilling and training initiatives. According to a recent report from Monday Pluralsight, these hiring freezes and layoffs are straining tech workers, with nearly half reporting that they are doing tasks outside their job functions. This adds stress—about half of those surveyed said they have considered leaving their job at least once a month—and can cut into time that might otherwise be better spent training these individuals to perform their new stretch roles. In industries where hiring is stubbornly difficult, the report revealed that training workers to fill skills gaps is far more cost-effective than recruiting to fill seats. Industry leaders are taking this notion to heart. The study revealed that nearly two-thirds of tech leaders were asked to cut costs, while three-quarters still plan to increase their spending on tech skill development in the coming year.
