There are scores of articles being written right now that promise a solution to the tremendous amounts of turnover we’re seeing in workplaces; however, there is no silver-bullet solution. If the answer was more compensation or flexible hours, employers would know exactly what to do. Finding a real solution, though, is a lot more complex—and a lot of it has to do with toxicity. According to a recent survey involving 2,200 US employees, 62 percent said their top reason for quitting is a toxic culture. Other studies have been more direct, stating that toxic workplaces are the main driver of the Great Resignation. And this response is fully justified in the minds of several experts. “If you are continually subjected to microaggressions or Subtle Acts of Exclusion (SAE), you don’t owe anything extra,” said Dr. Tiffany Jana. “If you are not appreciated or compensated for the extra you keep signing up for, stop raising your hand. And if you are being asked to do substantively more than the job requires, especially if it exceeds the agreed time commitment, hard pass.”
