Nearly one-third of large US companies are exploring schedule shifts, such as four-day and four-and-a-half-day workweeks, states the 2024 KPMG US CEO Outlook Pulse Survey. Logistics and transportation company Fuel Transport has already started implementing those ideas by shifting some staff to a 35-hour workweek.
In addition to the schedule change, Fuel Transport has rolled out a virtual work program, increased vacation days for all regular full-time employees, and offered 12 weeks of parental leave in the US.
"This is not an easy industry. It can be demanding and unpredictable, and part of why I started this company was to invest in employee health and well-being on a completely different level," explains Fuel Transport CEO Robert Piccioni in a press release.
The company notes that the changes are intended to give eligible workers (that is, not truck drivers or frontline employees) more flexibility, autonomy, and time. Fuel Transport seeks to offer "Better working conditions, more balance, more time to focus on what fulfills them and enables their strongest self to show up," Piccioni says.
