The article discusses the Growth of Binney & Smith Inc., owner of the ubiquitous Crayola brand. They conducted 360-degree surveys with their leadership team; assessed their talents, leadership abilities, and skills; and defined opportunities for improvement. One-on-one and team coaching with external consultants followed, and a deeper probe into their leadership capabilities was initiated. The intent was to help strengthen their positive behaviors and provide candid feedback on areas for improvement. Last year, the company partnered with a Canadian firm, Eagle's Flight, to develop a leadership foundation training course. The training has required a significant investment of time and money, but that was expected from the beginning of this venture. It also has required substantial effort in planning. Feedback to date from employees regarding the training has been extremely positive. Acceptance has been widespread, and the company is beginning to see more effective leadership behavior take place.
