The article reports on the impact of performance-management programs on the performance of managers and employees of business enterprises in the U.S. According to managers, performance-management is a time-consuming chore, while employees look at it with trepidation. Meanwhile, about 56% of line managers believe that the process is not valuable. Thus, instead of settling on a method, several organizations prefer to tinker with the systems by changing the ratings scale, moving to a technology-based format, or revising various competencies. It is further noted that managers should be coached to set clear expectations and to provide regular feedback.
