The article reports on the results of the survey on the current chief learning officer (CLO) population, conducted by the American Society for Training & Development and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It profiles the current position of CLOs, career histories, educational backgrounds, and competencies these heads believe to be critical for success. Findings revealed that the current role for CLOs are similar to those of Steve Kerr of General Electric Co., the first to gain the title of CLO in mid-1990s. Results indicated that CLOs wants a dual competency in learning, improving performance and the productivity of learning function. To be a successful CLO, one must be a skilled learning professional and a business person.
