The article discusses the impact of computer-based simulations, games, and online assessment tools on emergency personnel training in the U.S. A significant step to integrate the multitude of federal, state, regional, and local emergency training initiatives was taken in 2004 when the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has introduced the National Incident Management System-Incident Command System (NIMS-ICS). Even though virtual simulations are not a new phenomenon in training, computer-based simulation and gaming technology has moved into the mainstream of emergency response training in several years.
