This article presents author's views on online learning. The first wave of online learning wasn't as well received by organizations as expected, and the predications about it taking over the world didn't occur. The bottom line is that technology will be used for learning, so you might as well learn from the experience of others. Part of the reason that online learning didn't grow as fast as expected is that early predictions were based on outlandish assumptions. Those assumptions flew in the face of everything workplace learning and performance professionals know to be true about learning. Online learning is now receiving more thoughtful consideration.
