Incorporate Augmented and Virtual Reality Into Your Learning Environment

The augmented and virtual reality markets are expected to exceed $150 billion in five years. These technologies are already becoming mainstream and will continue to be more affordable and accessible. Each of these technologies holds unique potential for organizational learning and support.

As an instructional designer or learning technologist, you may be interested in these technologies, but unsure if your organization has the need, expertise, or resources to develop a solution.

At this LearnNow workshop, you’ll learn the basics of developing simple AR and VR solutions, and understand how to get started on a more complex design. You will see demos of interesting augmented and virtual reality solutions, discuss their unique design considerations, and build working experiences that you can then replicate for your organization. Finally, you will work on a personal-use case for how to leverage these technologies in your organization and look at build-versus-buy decisions.

This event is perfect for anyone interested in exploring new technology and how it can be used to improve workplace talent development.

[Note: This is a design workshop, not a development workshop. You will be developing some simple AR and VR experiences, but no coding is required.]

Welcome to LearnNow
We’ll kick off the event by discussing some of the objectives and setting expectations for the next day and a half.

9-10:30 a.m.

AR/VR Demos, Use Cases, and Design Elements
We’ll review some samples of AR and VR interactions and discuss their potential uses for organizational learning and performance support. We’ll also discuss the unique design considerations of AR and VR.
10:30-10:45 a.m. Break
11 a.m.-12 p.m. Introduction to Cardboard VR
Cardboard VR is an accessible app that allows you to shoot immersive video. We’ll demo how the app works, and you’ll have time to shoot footage on your own. Finally, you’ll share what you shot with the group.
12-1:15 p.m. Lunch
1:15-2:30 p.m. VR Debrief, Use Cases, and Action Plan
Back from lunch, we’ll share some of the VR footage that you shot. Then, we’ll discuss lessons learned and brainstorm various use cases for VR in your organization. You will also begin to work on an action plan for using VR when you get back to work.
2:30-2:45 p.m. Break
2:45-4 p.m. Understanding Build or Buy Decisions
AR/VR can be a big investment. We’ll look at the questions you need to ask if you’ll be outsourcing development. Alternatively, if you’re looking at building in-house, we’ll walk through that process and the different roles needed.

HP Reveal is an easy to use platform that can create simple AR experiences. After a brief overview, you’ll have a chance to get hands-on with HP Reveal and create an augmented reality interaction.
10:30-10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. AR Debrief, Use Cases, and Action Plan
Now that you’ve created a simple AR experience, we’ll discuss lessons learned and various use cases for AR in your organization. You will also begin to work on an action plan for using AR when you get back to work.
11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Day 2 Wrap Up
Share lessons learned from workshop and next steps.
