Have you ever joined a company and found out that some employees were skeptical about talent development based on their experiences with HR? That’s how the newly-hired CTDO of a healthcare organization, Camila, feels as she approaches Nolan, who manages one of the company’s technology teams.

Nolan has spent years building a reputation as a “company cowboy” for bucking HR trends and policies, specifically a forced ranking system of performance management that he felt was unfair—which his team no longer follows. However, his team’s productivity has begun to slip. This prompts Camila to reach out, try to set the record straight, and build a new partnership between Nolan’s team and her own. Nolan just doesn’t seem to understand how what Camila does is different from what HR does.

This situation comes from the upcoming ATD Press book Work the Problem. In this podcast, Kathryn Stafford, a developmental editor for ATD and author of the book, will share some more details from Camila’s story. Then, Chris Adams, a senior consultant at Handshaw and contributor to the book, will weigh in with his take on the story.
