Unfortunately, it took me five years to start studying and apply because of my hectic schedule. Then one day, I decided that I had to commit myself somehow to start. I had also started my coaching training, which taught me some methods to stay committed to my goal. For instance, I asked people to remind me of my commitment and let them know that I aimed to get my certification by the end of the year. I also visualized holding my certificate, and I practiced writing my name with CPLP after it.
I purchased the ATD Learning System and registered for the Knowledge Exam. Because I’m a morning person, I started studying early each day and it worked: I completed 10 chapters in less than three months. I was aware of my learning style, so rather than just reading, I prepared my own study notes and I rehearsed subjects as if I were giving lectures on them. I did practice exams at the end of each chapter as well.
I passed the Knowledge Exam on my first try. As one of the first candidates for Skills Application Exam (SAE), I worried a lot because I knew no details about it aside from the sample tests ATD published. Unfortunately, I could not complete the exam on time and I failed, missing the passing score by only a few points. I was disappointed; I even thought about quitting the whole process. Then I remembered that I made a commitment, and I was so close to the final step. So I pulled myself together and started to study again. And finally, I passed in January, with just a month’s delay in my commitment.
My recommendations for candidates are to first find people to help keep you committed to your journey. Then, identify your learning style and create your own study materials while covering each topic in the ATD Learning system. Take the practice tests, and ask yourself how you could use the topic in your workplace. This approach will help a lot in SAE preparation. Last, but not the least, identify your approach for answering SAE exam questions and time yourself while you practice. Some people read all the support materials first then answer the questions, some first read the questions and then the materials, and others scan the materials first, then review the questions. Follow the method that works best for you.
The CPLP proves my competency not only in learning and development, but also as an international professional. However, it is not only about making yourself recognized. Now, I have the expertise to look at problems from a systems thinking approach.
