Have you ever looked down and saw your feet at the edge of a cliff? That’s how a young operations manager, Theo, feels in his new job for a century-old lighting company.

Despite being underqualified, Theo got the job because the CEO knew him from when he worked summers at its warehouse in college. Now, it’s up to him to turn the warehouse’s performance around. Damaged product, high turnover, and low morale plague the facility, and Theo has nearly zero support system to help him implement changes. He tries nearly everything—training, reorganizing the warehouse floor, changing workers’ shifts—but nothing works.

This situation comes from the upcoming ATD Press book Work the Problem. In this podcast, Kathryn Stafford, a developmental editor for ATD and author of the book, will share some more details from Theo’s story. Then, Ben Locwin, executive advisor at Valeocon Management Consulting and contributor to the book will weigh in with his take on the problem.
