Amazon Looks to New Tech to Train Seasonal Hires

Monday, November 28, 2016

With the holiday season approaching, retailers are looking to expand their workforces with seasonal employees. With this expansion comes the need to train, and train quickly. One of the biggest retailers in the world, Amazon, has been using technology to decrease the time it takes to train new hires to as little as two days, compared with six weeks at a traditional warehouse job. This shorter training period saves the retailer money, which it then passes on to potential employees in the form of higher wages as they expand their workforce by nearly 40 percent, adding 120,000 temporary employees in of November and December. This incoming talent is also good for business the rest of the year. Last year Amazon retained 14 percent of its seasonal hires, in part through offering perks like prepaid tuition for warehouse workers who remain for at least a year. And although worker training is an ongoing process, this year Amazon’s priority in the fourth quarter will be “[identifying] the technology that can set an employee up as efficiently and as safely as possible.” said John Olsen, Amazon’s vice president of human resources, worldwide operations.
