Bill Gates: Meeting In-Person No Longer the "Gold Standard"

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

The global health crisis has dramatically changed business culture, and many experts agree these changes won’t be going away once the pandemic abates. One of those experts is Bill Gates, who says remote work across industries will become more prevalent and business travel will fall by the wayside as in-person meetings become less important. “My prediction would be that over 50 percent of business travel and over 30 percent of days in the office will go away,” the industry titan of Microsoft fame said in an interview with New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin. Gates says video conferencing software has proven its effectiveness during the outbreak, and after it’s over, the type of travel to make in-person meetings will no longer be the gold standard. Although, that isn't to say meeting in person is without merit. Gates says that over-reliance on video conferencing platforms will make it difficult to meet new people and to meet those you already know serendipitously. One thing is certain, though: the way we work has been forever changed.
