Boosting Emotional Intelligence

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

Modern workplaces are starting to understand the value of soft skills, not only in making the act of work less demoralizing but also in maximizing effectiveness and profitability. As a result, a newfound prioritization has been placed on an employee’s emotional intelligence, or their ability to use and manage their feelings effectively while understanding and empathizing with the feelings of others. To boost emotional intelligence, a person needs to first become more introspective. To do this, it helps to ask and reflect. Understand how your moods affect your thoughts and decision-making skills, and identify what qualities you are drawn to in other people and why. The three-second trick is also an effective way to boost emotional intelligence and can be applied if you find yourself too quick to speak in a situation. Ask if what you want to say needs to be said. Then ask if it needs to be said by you specifically. Then ask if it needs to be said by you at that moment. If the answer to any question is no, then don’t say it. It’s also helpful to think forward into the future. Although it might make you feel good in the short term to really lay into a subordinate, what will the long-term impact be? Will it ultimately help you achieve your goals, or hinder your progress?
