Boundaries Are Important for Successful Remote Work

Monday, September 28, 2020

The transition to remote work has been difficult for many. The shift happened quickly, and most were unprepared for the ramifications of working from home in the long-term. Companies were unable to train employees through the pivot, and many were left rudderless in the digital sea of video calls and updating spreadsheets in their pajamas. Employers, however, can help employees feel more grounded by offering some guidance on the best remote practices. First, commit to having defined workspaces. While everyone’s situation is different, it helps to set clear boundaries of where “work” is and where “home” is. If you’re checking your email from a laptop in bed, you’re likely to continue doing that past work hours. This blurs the already permeable boundary between work life and personal life and can have detrimental effects on your well-being. With that in mind, developing a regular work schedule is also a good idea. The ability to seamlessly switch between domestic and professional responsibilities might sound like a dream, but in fact, muddying the waters in this way gets extremely confusing and both categories end up suffering. Finally, it helps to commit to connecting with your team. Remote work often means alone work. Remote employees need to feel a sense of place within the organization and feel that they are valued. One-on-one meetings and group huddles can help overcome “remote” feelings of remote work.
