Breaking the Cycle of Monday Dread

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Many employees find themselves in a similar situation as the weekend draws to a close: It’s Sunday evening, and their stomachs are in knots because they're worried about the week to come. Monday mornings are inevitable, but they don’t have to send workers into a fit of existential dread on a weekly basis; this cycle can and should be broken. According to recent research, employees' well-being tends to skew upward as weekends approach, and down again when Monday hits. While everyone suffers from the occasional “case of the Mondays,” this cycle has demonstrable negative impacts on an employee’s ability to thrive in the workplace. Over time, low levels of perceived well-being lead to higher levels of absenteeism, higher levels of turnover, and higher healthcare costs to the organization. So, what can employers do to put an end to this cycle? First, flexibility is crucial. Managers need to demonstrate it’s OK to work from home or a coffee shop on occasion, and OK to leave early if you need to and make up work later in the evening. Second, it’s important employees know their work is meaningful. Let employees see their value and understand their role in the bigger purpose. Finally, employees want to progress professionally. Have frequent coaching conversations with them, and give them the tools they need to grow in the ways they desire.
