Team building is an important part of business success, and the pandemic has created challenges in that regard. It’s difficult for employees to feel invested in one another and connected to the organization’s overall mission while working remotely—but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are several ways an organization can still build solid teams when its workforce is decentralized; it just takes some creativity. Consider having virtual trivia nights or teamwide virtual happy hours after work to give team members the opportunity to unwind with each other in a non-work-related way. Similarly, you can offer lunch & learn sessions and morning coffee meetups to check in and sharpen skills. Contests are another great way to encourage team building while injecting some healthy competition into day-to-day work. And while all these ideas can help build a team remotely, it’s still important to meet with employees face-to-face on occasion and when it’s safe to do so. Consider quarterly in-person, in-office sessions.
