Clear Gap Between Leadership and Employees Regarding Training Revealed in New Study

Tuesday, November 3, 2020

It’s not a surprise that there can be a major disconnect between the way C-suite leadership views an organization’s culture, and what that organization’s rank and file employees know to be true—particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. To better understand this gap, IBM’s Institute for Business Value launched a study that revealed the stark contrast between the two categories. Specifically, C-suite executives ranked organizational complexity, inadequate skills, and employee burnout as the top three greatest challenges their organizations will face over the next two years, but only 19 percent of HR executives say they are prepared to face them. What's more, 74 percent of executives said they’re confident they are helping their employees learn new skills, but only 38 percent of their employees agreed. Amy Wright, the author of the study, shared this about her findings: “Business leaders are looking to close the skills gap and cultivate a sustainable workforce amid COVID-19, but less than four in 10 HR executives report they have the skills needed to achieve their enterprise strategy. If people and talent are key to business success, there is a clear need for HR to rapidly transform to meet new workforce challenges presented by the pandemic.”
